Generator Exchange at Pumping Station, Hampshire

Client background

A R Banks recently completed a generator exchange at a pumping station in Hampshire, removing the retiring generator and replacing it with a new one. This project was undertaken on behalf of P&I Group.
P&I Group are a friendly, family run business who specialise in critical power solutions. Founded in 1999, the company has grown to become a leading independent supplier of generators and UPS systems with a genuine commitment to quality and service. They ensure that even in the toughest of environments, clients can trust their power is protected.

The requirement

P&I Group instructed us to undertake a generator exchange at a pumping station in Hampshire. The project required careful planning due to restricted site access and the critical nature of the infrastructure involved.

The objective was to safely remove the existing generator and install a new, fuel-efficient and reliable unit with minimal disruption to site operations.

The challenge

Access to the pumping station was severely restricted, ruling out the use of larger lifting equipment. The confined working area required precise handling of both the outgoing and incoming generators, while maintaining the highest safety standards throughout.

The solution

To overcome the access constraints, we deployed a Hoeflon C10e compact crane, supported by a tracked carrier. This combination allowed for safe, controlled and accurate movement of the generators within the restricted footprint of the site.

All plant, equipment and generators were transported using our Volvo rigid cheesewedge (ramped) vehicle, fitted with a Fassi 45 t/m crane, ensuring efficient and secure logistics from start to finish.

All lifting operations were carried out under a CPA Contract Lift, with all planning, risk assessments, method statements and on-site management handled in-house by our skilled and experienced team.

The outcome

The generator exchange was completed smoothly and without issue, despite the challenging access conditions. The new generator was installed safely and efficiently, providing the pumping station with a modern, dependable power solution.

A R Banks Director Stuart Banks led this project. He said: “The project was delivered on time, with no incidents and no disruption to the wider site operations. This proved to be a great example of how the right equipment, planning and expertise can make complex access challenges manageable. Plus it gave me the opportunity to get on the controls, which I love!”
