Residential Earthworks Project

Client background

A R Banks recently completed a comprehensive earthworks and ground preparation project for a private residential client in Hampshire.

The requirement

The residents were looking to improve surface water management around their property to address drainage issues and reduce the risk of water accumulation. Alongside this, the works were designed to prepare the site for future extensions and landscaping, creating a stable and well-graded foundation for the next phase of development. By strengthening the ground conditions and improving overall site presentation, the project ensured the area was both structurally sound and visually prepared, supporting long-term usability and future construction plans.

The solution

The project was split into four stages to enable us to meet the clients’ requirements:

Bulk Excavation & Sub-Base Installation
Our team carried out bulk excavation works to form the footprint for a proposed extension and patio area. Following excavation, a Type 1 Limestone sub-base was supplied and compacted to provide a robust and level foundation for future construction.

Decommissioning of Existing Parking Area
The existing parking area was fully decommissioned, including the removal of all hardstanding materials. The area was reinstated with quality topsoil to support future seeding and planting, restoring the natural aesthetics of the property frontage.

French Drain Installation
To enhance surface water management adjacent to the new parking area, we installed a French drain system, improving site drainage performance and protecting the surrounding ground from water pooling and erosion.

Cut & Fill Reprofiling of Rear Garden
The sloped rear garden was regraded and reprofiled using precise cut-and-fill techniques, transforming the terrain into two level, functional outdoor spaces suitable for recreational use and future landscaping.

Challenges & resolutions

The property is located within the grounds of Queen Elizabeth Country Park, which meant that accessibility was challenging. We navigated this issue by utilising more compact vehicles and plant where possible, and transporting them individually, rather than on a large lowloader vehicle as we often do.

Navigating the site itself was a challenge too; there were two work areas - one to the north of the property and fenced garden area, and one to the south. We carefully planned how to best access the southern area, ensuring the Victorian utilities located underground were not damaged whilst the groundworks were being undertaken.

The outcome

The works were completed efficiently and to specification, delivering a stable, well-drained, and aesthetically enhanced platform for subsequent development. This project showcases A R Banks’ commitment to precision, environmental consideration and quality workmanship across all residential earthworks and ground-engineering projects.
